NBARC will be hosting local Fox
Hunts
The hunts will be in our local area around Scottsmoor, Mims,
Titusville, and Cocoa area. Certificates will be given out to the winner (s).
Mobile and ROCA (walk hunts) are now being conducted.
Squawk Box T-Hunt
Transmitter
It has a voice chip for a
60 second recording capacity, and a "non - volatile" message memory,
so recorded messages will remain intact even if power is interrupted for
prolonged periods.( according to the spec sheet, 100 years ! ) This is being
used on our ROCA hunts.
PicCon Controller
I have also purchased a PicCon controller
and it is pre wired to fit a Icom, Yaesu, or a Radio Shack HT by the mic and
audio jacks. It will be installed inside a ammo box with a 5/8 wave 3 DB gain antenna on top of the
box, it can also be chained to a
tree if left unattended. This is used on the Mobile Hunts.
Unattended
If we must leave it unattended We will put a form letter
out to the Brevard County Sheriff advising them of time, location, and date of the Hunt.
Normally the hunt master will be close by to check in the hunters and a keen eye
on the fox. This is incase the fox is spotted by a passer by and they call in a suspicious looking box with an
antenna on it thinking its a bomb
Arrow Yagi
The Arrow Yagi 3 element beam with the attenuator
is probably the best way to go price wise to get started (see below) click on
the order form, print it out and mail a check to Arrow Antennas. Be sure to get
the blade & cable kit to go with it.
The tape measure 3 element Yagi antenna can be built (construction plans below) with a attenuator from a kit.
ICOM
Has a IC- T7H 2/440 HT IC-T7H. This is a nice unit with a large signal meter. HRO Has the unit for $170.
Yaesu
Has a FT- 60R 2/440 HT for $170. and has a huge LCD with a signal meter.
We are planning
Weekly ROCA foxhunts (walk hunt). Everybody is welcome to participate. Visit "Starting Map & Rules"
for details on the next hunt.
Do I need a Amateur License?
Since this is done on the Amateur (ham)
radio bands is a license required? No ... a license is not required, since you
are receiving and not transmitting when you participate in a radio orienteering
event. Numerous ham radio clubs have frequent fox-hunting meets that you can
participate in, again for receiving only, a license is not required. However,
having a license will add to your enjoyment and understanding of the radio
direction finding aspects of the sport. The FCC provides an entry level license
that includes a written test over basic radio principles, operating practices,
rules & regulations. This "Technician class" license, which covers
the 2 meter band, does not have a Morse Code requirement. For class information
