THE NORTH BREVARD AMATEUR RADIO CLUB FOXHUNT ASSOCIATION

Fox Hunt Frequency 146.565

Purpose:
  • Provide practice and enhance skill in radio direction finding for and by radio amateurs.
  • Promote teamwork within the amateur community.
  • To help  or "Elmer" newcomers and old-timers alike in the skills of radio direction finding.
  • Make available a competent pool of people with the skills for finding the source of intentional or unintentional radio interference.
  • Have fun!
Rules of the mobile T Hunts:
  1. The hunt boundaries will be in the North Brevard County in and around the Scottsmoor, Mims, and Titusville area.
  2. The hidden transmitter will be within 100 yards of a public road and must be accessible to the public with no admission fee required.
  3. The hidden transmitter's signal must be able to be received at the starting point utilizing an antenna with no more than 3db gain.
  4. The hidden transmitter will use a constant power level during the hunt and the transmitter antenna configuration will not change during the hunt.
  5. The hunt frequency will be 146.565 MHz.
  6. Each hunt team must travel together in a single vehicle.
  7. At the discretion of the "FOX", hints may be given at various intervals during the hunt.  Hints will be given on the 146.565 MHz.  The times any hints are to be given, and the scoring penalty value for each hint, will be made known to the hunters before the start of the hunt.
  8. So that all teams can hunt with equally high enthusiasm, the FOX will not announce that the hunters are in the area or that any teams have found the fox.
  9. Maximum hunt time is 3 hours.  At the expiration of the time limit, the FOX location will be announced on the NBARC repeater 145.250 (-) PL tone 107.2 Hz and 146.565
  10. Upon arriving at the FOX, each team will immediately check in with the Huntmaster by stopping in front of the FOX to record their time and mileage.
  11. All hunter teams are to observe all traffic laws and are to respect the property rights of all property owners.
  12. All hunt teams must register at the starting location before the start of the hunt.  Registration will include providing the names, calls (if applicable), and odometer reading for the hunt vehicle.
  13. Rules number 1 through 7 may be modified for a particular hunt.  If modified, the applicable rules for the hunt will be provided IN WRITING to each hunt team prior to the start of the hunt.
Specific Rules for the ROCA hunt.

The hunt will have 1 transmitters and will be on the .5 Mile hiking trail in the park. The Fox will be within 20 ft of the walking path. This is a learning hunt for those interested in foxhunting. Everyone is Welcome. This will be a ROCA hunt  (Radio-Orienteering in a Compact Area)). At the bottom of this page, see " ROCA" for complete details.

 Foxhunting is good for those that need to exercise by walking and add the thrill of looking for hidden transmitters. You do not need to have an Amateur Radio License to do this. NBARC will have equipment for those that are just getting started to use. Fox Hunt workshops being conducted.

Hunt Starting Location:
Wuesthoff Park. Cheney Hwy & Barna Ave.
  • Driving Directions:
    Traveling north or south on I95, exit 215 onto SR 50, go east to Barna Ave. 2nd Signal Light, turn south on to Barna, go one block turn right on Wuesthoff St (across from Fire Station). Park is straight ahead of you 1-1/2 blocks

  • Talk in will be on the NBARC repeater on 145.250 Mhz.

 

Date & Time:
  • Fox Hunts are temporary suspended till November because of mosquitoes and heat  Starting time: 9:00 A.M. This will be a ROCA hunt with one transmitter.
  • Everyone is Welcome. Demonstrations will be conducted.
  • Weather permitting.
  • Watch this location for last minute changes.

Scoring for the mobile T hunter:

The score of each team will be the sum of the time and distance components.  The lowest (quickest time, shortest miles) = The lowest score will be declared the winner.

  • Time:  (120 - hunt time in minutes)
  • Distance:  (25 - distance in miles to the nearest 1/10th) Time + Distance = winner.
Scoring for the Huntmaster(s):

The score for  the Huntmaster(s) will be derived from the scores of each hunt team that successfully finds the fox within the allotted time.

  • For all teams completing the hunt, add all time (in minutes) and distance (in miles) and divide by the number of teams.
