Titusville is located on the Indian River on the East Central Coast of Florida. The Kennedy Space Center is located less than ten miles to the east across the Indian River and all space launches are clearly visible to the naked eye at the river’s edge. Mosquito Lagoon, a large body of water, separates the Indian River at the south for about ten miles north of Titusville and by means of the Haulover Canal joins at the north with the Halifax River. The name “Mosquito” is appropriate as the inhabitants of this coast land known as Merritt Island waged a major battle with the mosquitoes for the land. Thankfully, after more than 50 years of “mosquito control”, this is no longer a problem. The United States obtained Florida from Spain in 1819 and Florida became a territory in1822. This portion of Florida, (Titusville, Brevard County) had very few white inhabitants until after the Civil War when the ability to homestead a section (160 acres) of land was give to Veterans to entice settlers to the area. Florida became a state in 1845 and the census listed 66,500 white residents, of the entire state, mostly in the northern area. Titusville was located in an area known as Mosquito County shortly after statehood in the mid 1800’s but was changed to Brevard County to attract more homesteaders. With the building of the Florida East Coast Railroad to Titusville in the 1880’s and down to the Miami area in the 1890’s, Florida began to grow. The population passed a million in the 1920’s during the Florida land boom and has passed 13 million at this time (1991), so the rule of the Mosquito is over.
